6GK5216 – 4BS00 – 2AC2 (corresponding to SCALANCE XC216 – 4C) does not support POE power supply. The official parameter list of this layer 2 managed industrial Ethernet switch only lists the conventional interface configurations such as 12 10/100Mbit/s RJ45 ports, 4 1000Mbit/s combo ports, and 1 console port. No POE power supply related ports and functional parameters are mentioned.

The SCALANCE XC-200 series that supports POE power supply are special models clearly marked “PoE” such as XC206-2G PoE and XC216-3G PoE. This type of POE model can provide data transmission and power supply for WLAN access points, industrial cameras and other equipment at the same time, and is also marked with corresponding POE power budget and other exclusive parameters, which are not available in 6GK5216 – 4BS00 – 2AC2.

6GK5216 – 4BS00 – 2AC2 (corresponding to SCALANCE XC216 – 4C) is a pure layer 2 switch by default and does not support layer 3 routing function, but this function can be activated with the help of Siemens’ exclusive KEY – PLUG (type C plug) upgrade.

6GK5216-4BS00-2AC2 (SCALANCE XC216-4C) supports basic VLAN features commonly used in industrial networks. The core is designed around isolating broadcast domains and optimizing traffic, as follows:

1. IEEE 802.1Q tag VLAN: This is the most basic VLAN implementation. By adding VLAN tags (Tag) in Ethernet frames and dividing different VLAN IDs (1-4094, following the standard range), cross-port VLAN isolation is achieved to avoid broadcast storm interference from devices in different network segments.
2. Port static VLAN assignment: Supports directly assigning designated RJ45 ports or SFP combination ports to fixed VLANs. The ports can only forward frames of the VLAN to which they belong. It is suitable for fixed networking scenarios where industrial field equipment is divided into functional areas (such as control areas and monitoring areas).
3. VLAN Trunk mode: Four 1000Mbit/s combo ports (SFP/RJ45) support Trunk mode, which can carry tagged frames of multiple VLANs at the same time, facilitating the transmission of VLAN data across switches, such as summarizing multi-VLAN traffic when connecting upstream and downstream industrial switches.
4. Access port mode: The conventional 12 10/100Mbit/s RJ45 ports support Access mode by default, which only receives and forwards untagged frames, automatically joins the designated VLAN, and adapts to the access needs of terminal equipment such as industrial sensors and PLCs.

Advanced VLAN features not supported:

As a Layer 2 industrial switch, 6GK5216-4BS00-2AC2 focuses on basic networking needs. It does not support dynamic VLAN (such as IEEE 802.1x certified VLAN, MAC address binding VLAN), nor does it support advanced functions such as Private VLAN and VLAN mapping. If you need such features, you need to choose Siemens’ higher-end SCALANCE XM/XR series switches.
